THE ART OF TRYING

THE ART OF TRYING

I don’t want to be blunt, but my motto in life is “ IF YOU DON’T TRY, YOU SUCK “

Now what exactly does the word TRY mean ?

Simple Definition of try
to make an effort to do something : to attempt to accomplish or complete something
to do or use (something) in order to see if it works or will be successful
to do or use (something) in order to find out if you like it
I consider myself very lucky that at a very young age, I was taught the value of hardwork by my family. Whether it was my moms 11 brothers and sisters leading by example and if you didn’t keep up or were able to follow instructions, you were left in the dust. Or my dads family working on the farm and not stopping until the work was done.
One of the most important lessons I learned from all of this is you TRY your best always, no exceptions. Now does this mean being THE best ? Not at all, but it definitely means being YOUR best.
I can remember as a kid, my mom asking me when I was having trouble with something “ Did you try your best ?” If my answer was definitely yes, I would get help, but if I could honestly say no, I would have to go back and try again. This could have been anything from cleaning my room, school work, chores and more.
On the flipside of this, I was always supported and encouraged to TRY new things. My family was not very adventurous, but for some reason, I was. When I wanted to get into BMX bikes at 12, they support my efforts and watched me come home with many injuries, my dad let me use his woodworking garage to hang and paint bikes. All the while not deterring or uttering any unsupporting words. When I wanted to go on the road with a band at 19 and travel across Canada playing clubs, they stood by me and supported my choice for some reason ( Still not sure how that happened). My point is, I was wanting and needing to TRY new things to see if I liked it, and they were there right beside me with love and support.

There is nothing more inspiring to myself then my children or students working so hard at something and not giving up until they get it. They TRY their best and if that doesn’t work, they find another level of TRYING they did know existed. Also when adults in their 60’s sign up for drum lessons and say they have wanted to do it since they were in their teens. This is amazing for them to give this a TRY, and experience one of the greatest things in life. .
I never was one to believe in the adage “ You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. If you believe this, you may have made the tricks harder in your own mind and therefore don’t need to TRY.
Along with TRYING comes other words like PERSEVERENCE, ADVERSITY and many more. These are many other blogs to be written, but the point is if we TRY our best, we can sleep a little easier at night knowing we gave it our all. Also if we give ourselves the chance to TRY new things, we might find new and amazing inspiration in life, and this is a good thing right ?
Most times in life, the only thing standing between us TRYING our best or TRYING new and exciting things, is ourselves.
